Program Updates - October 2023 Newsletter

Registration opened for returning families on Oct 1st and wrapped up around Oct 14th.  Over the next few weeks new families will be contacted for spaces that may be available.  If you know new families who are waiting to find out if they have a space, they can contact the program coordinators of the program they are interested in if they have questions.

U10 Program

The U10 program will run in a similar way to last year, with no significant changes except for a new coordinator. Many thanks to MarySue Henneberry who coordinated the U10 program for several years! I am excited to get to know U10 families while hanging out in the cabin enjoying hot lunch and at social opportunities. I will be sending program start up information by email very soon, and am in the process of securing a hotel discount code for The Grand Hotel at Sun Peaks for the Nancy Greene Festival (March 22-23rd, 2024).  Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions as the season gets underway. U12 Race Program

Welcome to U12 Racing!  A special welcome to all the first year U12 athletes and families!    We are looking forward to supporting all the U12 athletes in their growth and development with lots of time on course, off island race opportunities, club races and all around ski development. The Nancy Green Festival at Sun Peaks (March 22 & 23) is always a very fun opportunity for U12 skiers to participatet in a variety of events with a focus on fun. For the 2 day U12 skiers this is also the first chance to participate in early winter training at Sun Peaks and Christmas camps.   I am excited to be coordinator for this fun filled team, the families and coaches; please get in touch with any questions.   Now let’s hope for snow as we get ready for the season!  Scarlet Tate (scarlettate75@gmail.com)

U14 Race Program

Welcome all U14 athletes and families! We are looking forward to getting the season underway. Our U14 race athletes will be participating in the Teck Coast Zone race series, with races this season at Mt. Washington, Grouse Mountain and Cypress Mountain and the U14 Provincials at Red Mountain.  The first race in the U14 Teck Coast Zone is being hosted by our very own Mt. Washington Ski Club on January 20 - 21, 2024 and we can’t wait to welcome all of the travelling athletes and families to experience the magic of Mt. Washington and the spirit of our Club.

Parents and families, please block the dates on your calendars (there will be significant volunteer opportunities available January 19, 20 and 21) and please watch for details regarding the volunteer opportunities to help make this race a success.

The BC Winter Games are back in 2024, and the U14 athletes get the chance to qualify to participate in the Games.  The Lhtako Quesnel 2024 BC Winter Games take place February 22 - 25, 2024 with skiing events being held at Troll Ski Resort. Stay tuned for more information and news about the Games and our Mt. Washington Ski Club team.

Thank you to all who were able to attend our virtual U14 Race Program pre-season meeting on October 22, 2023. If you missed it, or have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to be in touch.

Reminder: please update your RSVPs through SportsEngine so we can continue to plan for upcoming team travel and accommodations.

U16 Race Program

Our U16 athletes and families are gearing up for an action packed 2023-2024 season! While the race schedule is still being finalized, U16 race athletes are starting the season off with a training camp in Sun Peaks followed by the Teck Open race in Panorama right after we ring in the New Year. There are many opportunities to train, compete, and travel at this level of racing. The athletes look forward to training and racing at different mountains, and meeting new and familiar faces from other ski clubs across B.C. We will keep you posted on where this season takes our U16 race team, and share some highlights from their adventures each month. Thank you to all who were able to attend our virtual U16 Race Program pre-season meeting on October 22, 2023.

See you on the hill! Lara Graaten (lgraaten@sd68.bc.ca)

U12/U14/U16 All Mountain program update

Hello Everyone and yes, you read that correctly! We are so excited to announce that MWSC now offers an All Mountain program for U16 too! We have updated the description on the MWSC website (many thanks Rachel and John) and are excited to have the U16 All Mountain "coach in training" program join the family of programs offered by MWSC.

Each of the All Mountain programs are focused on building well-rounded skiers who are confident and comfortable skiing in all terrain and in all conditions. In these programs, skiers spend approximately 30% of their time learning essentials in a fun, small group environment in and out of the race gates, and the other 70% of their time refining and improving their free skiing skills. While athletes in this program will have the opportunity to race in Mt Washington Ski Club races, the race events are optional.

The  U16 All Mountain program also provides a place for older athletes to learn more about coaching children of all ages so that they are prepared for the ACA coaching course and possibly being a coach for the club in the future. As part of the U16 All Mountain experience they will also have the opportunity to be a Nancy Greene helper coach at various times throughout the season as a way to put those coaching skills they are learning about into practice. Please see the website for additional details and of course, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. Elizabeth Childs (echilds@telus.net
